Washington DC, July 23: The United States has on Monday imposed sanctions on Chinese state-run oil firm for allegedly breaching America’s law on dealing with Iran.

In a tweet, US secretary of state Mike Pompeo said: “The U.S. is serious about enforcing our sanctions on the outlaw regime in Iran. So today, we’re taking action against a Chinese company that acquired Iranian oil contrary to U.S. sanctions. No entity should support the regime’s destabilizing conduct by providing it with money.”

Pompeo said, “The US is imposing sanctions on Chinese entity Zhuhai Zghenrong and its chief executive Youmin Li. They violated US law by accepting crude oil,” according to ANI news reports.

The development came at times when Tehran and Washington are at loggerhead since President Donald Trump withdrew America from the 2015 landmark International Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty which aimed at curbing Iranian nuclear and missiles capabilities in exchange of sanctions relief.

Since then, Trump has slapped numerous sanctions on Iran, citing Tehran backs state-sponsored terrorism.

In May, Washington announced no fresh US sanctions waivers will be granted for the Iranian crude oil imports to only eight nations, including India, who enjoy Iranian oil. China and India are the largest importers of Iranian crude oil.

Currently, China and the US are also at loggerhead over their ongoing trade war.
