The United States President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen has been sentenced in prison for three years on Wednesday, by a federal judge, for the crimes he made, what Cohen said was directed by Trump. Crimes includes hush money payment to two women, who claimed to have affairs with Trump, in order to cover up Trump’s affair ahead of presidential election.
In a court hearing, Cohen said he regretted his loyalty towards Trump and said, “Recently the President tweeted a statement calling me weak and it was correct but for a much different reason than he was implying. It was because time and time again I felt it was my duty to cover up his dirty deeds.”
Trump’s fixer, attorney and enforcer Cohen implicated Trump in hush money controversy with a saying that he had paid a playboy and porn actress, who claimed to have affairs with Trump, at Trump’s order and direction. Cohen said the payoff was made to suppress the scandal as Trump was running the organization.
Trump attacked back at Cohen and said even if it was a campaign finance violation, it refers to a civil case which is worthy of only fines and alleged Cohen saying it was Cohen’s fault, as he was a lawyer, he must have known the rules.
Cohen said, “Blink loyalty to Trump led me to choose darkness over light,” and pledged he is “ensuring that history will not remember me as the villain of his story”. Court gave Cohen three months i.e., till March, in order to surrender voluntarily and gave him these months to prove himself right and thrown more light over the incident he dealt with Trump.
Cohen going to prison has shook legal and political circles. In a tweet, US Supreme Court lawyer Neal Ketyal wrote: “Sentence is bad news for Trump. In most jurisdictions, subordinates who carry out felonies at the direction of their boss get lower criminal sentences than the boss.” Ketyal further claimed that if went for trail, Trump would also be sentenced in a court.
