An earthquake of 6.2 magnitudes measured on the Ritcher Scale has struck off the southwest of the city of Sibolga on Monday on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, according to the United States (US) Geological Survey (USGS).

However, no immediate reports of damage or casualties were reported. Also, there were no signs of tsunami warnings from the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre after the earthquake.

The country is highly prone to severe tsunamis and earthquakes as Indonesia lies in the highly seismic “Ring of Fire” – a region in the basin of the Pacific Ocean.

A devastating earthquake which measured 9.1 magnitudes has in December 2004 struck off the Sumatra island which had triggered various strong tsunami waves in the Indian ocean, which claimed the lives of more than two lakh people in several nations, including Sri Lanka and India.

Last year, in more than a decade, the country had suffered several earthquakes and two major tsunamis, which claimed lives of around 3,000 people in Palu, as well as Central Sulawesi, where Friday’s earthquake occurred
