Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received greetings from world leaders for winning the municipal elections, despite his AK party got defeated in the capital, Ankara, and Istanbul for the first time.

According to ANI news reports, leaders including, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Guinean President Alpha Conde, former Bosniak member of the presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bakir Izetbegovic, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Serbia’ President Aleksandar Vucic, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and tripartite presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina chairman Milorad Dodik has congratulated and praised Erdogan for his multiple state victory.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister took it to twitter to congratulate Erdogan and wrote: “I am delighted to congratulate a friend of Pakistan Recep Tayyip Erdogan on another important victory in the Turkish local elections. The people of Pakistan wish him many more successes.”

The AK party has got 45 per cent of votes in favour in Sunday’s local elections, Turkish presidential source told state Anadolu media agency.

The AK party who has been dominating the country’s politics since 2002, has captured 15 metropolitan municipalities and 24 other cities.

However, Erdogan’s main opposition, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) drew 30.07 per cent of votes, capturing 11 metropolitan municipalities and other 10 cities. The CHP party gain control of Ankara, AK’s stronghold for decades, acquiring more than 50 per cent of votes in favour and also captured Istanbul with 48.79 per cent of votes in favour.

While addressing a gathering in Ankara, Erdogan has said the government would “make structural reforms to build a stronger economy against attacks”.
