Islamabad, May 21: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has on Monday filed a fresh petition in the Islamabad High Court seeking release from a jail, Lakhpat jail, on medical grounds.

According to Dawn news reports, a two-judge headed IHC bench which comprised of Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb and Justice Aamer Farooq will take up Sharif’s petition on Tuesday.

The petition sought suspension of Sharif’s seven-year prison sentence and subsequent grant of a post-detain bail over medical grounds. While citing medical reports, the petition claimed the condition of the former prime minister was critical and he is in need of proper and stress-free environment as he is suffering from a cardiac problem, according to doctors.

Sharif was granted bail by an apex court of Pakistan till May 7 in order to receive medical treatment without fleeing the country. He has been serving a seven-year prison term in connection with Al-Azizia steel mills corruption in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail.

He had filed a petition in a Supreme Court in May seeking a six-week bail extension on medical grounds, stating if the bail gets rejected, “unforgivable damage” will occur.

In July 2018, Sharif was sentenced to 10 years in prison in another case of corruption related to a four-story luxury property in London while his daughter was given seven years.

The three-time Premier was disqualified from holding office in 2017 for not revealing remuneration he received from a company owned by a son, an irregularity revealed after the publication of the Panama Papers.
