Finland‘ President Sauli Niinisto has approved the resignation application of the nation’s government during a meeting on Friday with the prime minister, Juha Sipla, which was broadcasted on the television channel MTV3.

According to Sputnik news reports, the government’s resignation has taken place against the setback of the unsuccessful attempts to reform the nation’s social and healthcare services.

At a brief conversation with Prime Minister Sipla, Niinisto said: “I am accepting [the government’s resignation].”

Sipla will ask the Finnish president to dissolve the parliament later in the day, according to country’s broadcaster YLE.

According to Huvudstadsbladet newspaper, Niinisto has also asked Sipla as well as his cabinet ministers to continue to operate in the country as a transitional government.

The president has asked the government to complete its term in office and serve as the caretaker government. Media reports said the government faltered after its major health reform virtually failed.

The reports have come amid Finland preparing for parliamentary elections scheduled on April 14 to determine the composition of the country’s 200-seat legislature, the Eduskunta assembly.
