During the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Sofia on 18th May, Emmanuel Macron, the President of France announced that the leaders of the European Union had unanimously decided to continue their respective nuclear deals with Iran, and protect their companies against any sanctions the US might impose upon them for supporting business grown in the Islamic Republic. Macron declared that the EU would respect the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action signed in 2015, and stand by it irrespective of US interruption.

The White House had withdrawn the US from the Iran Nuclear Deal last week and announced the re-imposing of sanctions on the Islamic Republic soon. This meant complete nullification of the deal signed between Tehran and the P5 + 1 powers. The United States had given the EU a maximum of six months to end all businesses in the country or risk exaction of sanctions forbidding them from signing any further contracts upon them

However, despite repeated American declarations, President Macron stated that the European Union would remain true to their deal with Iran. An apparent conference is expected to be held within the EU where negotiations for extending and modifying the Iran Nuclear Deal would take place. President Emmanuel Macron also highlighted that new clauses would be added upon nuclear programs after 2025, as well as other ballistic missile and weaponry usage in the Islamic Republic based on Iran’s conduct in the region.
