German foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Adebahr said Germany will back the US sanctions targeting Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his supporters, and also voiced up not to make the lives of Venezuelan citizens worse.

According to Sputnik news reports, while sustaining the pressure on embattled Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro, the United States has blocked all the assets of Venezuelan state-owned oil and gas entity PDVSA and has imposed a ban over deals with the PDVSA company until the opposition head Juan Guaido received full control of the company.

Germany’ move to back US sanctions follows similar punitive measures taken by Washington, which had sanctioned Maduro’s wife, Venezuelan officials and the state-owned oil and gas PDVSA company, also citing the “destruction of democracy in Venezuela”.

Prior to this, Berlin has called on Venezuelan president to hold a snap election in the nation, further threatening to recognize self-proclaimed interim president of the country, Juan Guaido.

At the very same time, Germany has recognized the opposition-run Venezuela’s national assembly which is chaired by Guaido, as “the only democratically legitimate institution that plays a special role in the country’s path to democracy”.

A political crisis in Venezuela has been escalated since Guaido declared himself as the interim president of Venezuela, and in January, held a mass protest against Maduro in order to oust him from the power. Since, the United States has backed Maduro, along with several other nations.
