Hong Kong Protests

Hong Kong is set to go under elections in 2020 but given the current political scenario which grips the city, it is going to have an impact on the elections. Hong Kong has been under a mass protest since July of this year due to a controversial extradition bill being introduced.

The protest has had a major impact on the Special Administrative Region, according to a report in Reuters, the city has seen a drop in august visitors by 40 percent. This has had a major impact on the local industry as well with retail sales going down by11.4 percent in July as compared to a year earlier.

The protest also has led to a lot of speculations amongst the world financial sector with regards to relocating their offices. Given the current climate of uncertainty with China currently involved in a trade war with the United States, the protests have had an added impact on their services.

According to a report in the South China Morning Post, if the Chinese government would take measures which are going to harm the autonomy of Hong Kong would slowly force the move of regional financial headquarters to different cities in Aisa.

The protests have managed to create a major impact on the city and have slowly grabbed the attention of the world. With the recent events of violence and vandalism, the security concern regarding human rights has led to a divide between the Pro-democratic parties and the pro-China parties.

The storming of the Legislative Council building was the turning point and has led to a difference in opinions amongst the people. With many believing that the protesters were right in what they did whereas some feel that they went a step ahead.

Given how the current situation has unfolded ever since concerns are there in the people with regards to the future of the city. The reaction of the Police forces has been violent than their reactions during the 2014 protests.

Leaders of the protest have even called the people to boycott the elections both the local elections which are due in 2019 and the legislative council elections in 2020. These elections are crucial for the city because if the pro-Beijing parties manage to win the seats, they are going to have an influence on the protesters and would maintain the Chinese influence in the city but if the Pro-democracy parties would win, it would bring in more changes. Those changes would threaten the stability in China and also the influence on the policies of the city.
