US House passes measure to rebuke President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration

The House of Representatives, controlled by Democrats, has on Tuesday passed a resolution to terminate the United States President Donald Trump’s declaration of a state of national emergency at the US border along with Mexican border, in a bid to bar Trump from starting the construction work over a border wall without any green signal from the US Congress.

The house has voted 245-182 to the measure, to revoke the US president’s national emergency declaration.

According to Guardian news reports, thirteen Republicans had joined Democrats in a move to revoke Trump’s executive order which he had signed earlier in February after the US lawmakers dismissed to authorize Trump’s request of $5.7 billion funds for his demand of the US-Mexico border wall.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, “This isn’t about the border. This is about the Constitution.”

The House-passed resolution will further face a referendum in the US Senate, where minimum votes cans also help the resolution to pass in what would mark the major revolt of Trump. Trump has already vowed to veto the resolution if the measures reach to his table.

Senate Republican, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, said, “I have been concerned, whenever any president, Republican or Democrat, moves beyond what most would consider being their authorities.”

Pelosi told reporters on Capitol Hill the issue was not a matter about partisanship, but a matter of “patriotism”. She said, “We would be delinquent in our duties if we did not resist if we did not fight back to overturn the president’s declaration.”

58 formal national security officials have released an open letter denouncing Trump’s emergency declaration on Monday.

The officials wrote: “Under no plausible assessment of the evidence is there a national emergency today that entitles the president to tap into funds appropriated for other purposes to build a wall at the southern border.”

Meanwhile, the US president urged members of his part to hold onto the line, and tweeted on Monday: “I hope our great Republican Senators don’t get led down the path of weak and ineffective Border Security. Without strong Borders, we don’t have a Country – and the voters are on board with us. Be strong and smart, don’t fall into the Democrats “trap” of Open Borders and Crime!”
