Beijing, June 25: Lawyers for Meng Wanzhou, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of China’s telecommunication giant Huawei Pvt Ltd, has on Monday urged Canadian justice minister to withdraw the extradition proceedings against Wanzhou who has been arrested last year in December in Vancouver over United States fraud charges.

According to Reuters news reports, in an official statement, Wanzhou’s lawyer stated they have sent a letter to Canada’s justice minister David Lametti urging him to pull back the extradition proceedings against Huawei CFO.

“The extradition proceedings are without merit and cessation of the proceedings would be in the best interests of Canada’s national interests,” the statement said.

In response to Chinese letter, the Canadian justice minister said it “cannot confirm receipt of the letter”, further adding Canada “respects the rule of law”, and that the nation was following its legal extradition procedures.

Chinese foreign ministry has on Friday said the country hopes Canada understands the consequences of supporting the United States in conflict and also doing at US bidding, as Vice President Mike Pence called on Beijing for the immediate release of two detained Canadian.

Without elaborating, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said, “We hope that the Canadian side will come to understand the full consequences of pulling chestnuts from the fire on behalf of the United States, and not inflict more harm on themselves.”

The US called for the release of two detained Canadian citizen in Beijing, after joining and supporting Canada into this case, in what they believed that it was tit-for-tat arrests followed by the arrest of Huawei CFO Wanzhou in Canada.
