Hundreds of Islamic State militants have surrendered along with hundreds more of their comrades trying to escape the jihadist groups’ last and tiny region in eastern Syria were caught on Wednesday, a commander said.

According to Reuters news reports, this week, a large number of Islamic State fighters have given up and surrendered to Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) after a stern assault on fighters’ enclave on Saturday and Sunday, though many remained inside, according to the commander.

The United States-backed SDF group has slowed down its assault in order to allow tens of hundreds of civilians to leave the Syrian province of Baghouz.

The commander said far more civilians were still in Baghouz that what the SDF had expected and the group wanted them to leave the region before it launches any strong assault in the area.

The senior SDF commander said, “There are a large number of fighters who are inside and do not want to surrender.”

The commander said, around 400 IS fighters were captured when trying to escape Baghouz including smugglers. Some hundreds of other jihadists surrendered, however, the number of people was not yet clear.

Those surrendering were among more than 2,000 people who left Baghouz on Wednesday in the latest evacuation process.
