The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) has denounced the Pakistani government for its new ordinance in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region.  The ordinance allows an extension of the powers of the armed forces. According to a report in ANI, the ICJ has said that the implementation of the law would lead to serious human rights violations.

According to the ordinance, it allows the armed forces to detain people without cause, and without trial. The ordinance would also allow the government to control the region and enforce greater restrictions to the region.  Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a province of critical and strategic importance for Pakistan.  The growing dissent in the region has been a concern for the government in Pakistan.

According to the report in ANI, ICJ’s Asia director Frederick Rawski said that the Pakistani government must cast-off the “dangerous, oppressive, and counterproductive strategy and instead strengthen its judicial process and law enforcement”

This is just similar to the ordinance which has been placed in Fata and Pata. This had allowed the government to have the necessary cover required to justify the detainment of the people in the region. The ICJ had also pointed out how the government had used the law as a cover for the detentions.

The International Commission of Jurists has been critical of the human rights violations in Pakistan. Earlier in the year, it is a non-governmental human rights group has been critical of the detentions. It can also be noted that in the recent situation Pakistan has been critical of the humanitarian crisis in Kashmir yet an ordinance like this is of grave concern for its international image.
