Washington DC, June 11: US secretary of state Mike Pompeo has on Monday labelled the agreement reached with Mexico as a “significant win” for the United States and people, saying it reflects “diplomacy at its finest”.

Addressing a media briefing, Pompeo told reporters, “Frankly, it reflects diplomacy at its finest. It shows the enduring strength, too, of the relationship between our two countries. It’s a significant win for the American people.”

While reiterating Washington’s stand on strict immigration, the secretary stated migrants crossing the US southern border seeking asylum would be quickly returned to their homeland, Mexico, according to ANI news reports.

He added, “We now have the capacity to do this full throttle and engage this in a way that will make a fundamental difference in the calculus for those deciding to transit Mexico to try to get into the United States.”

Speaking over the immigration agreement, Pompeo asserted it has noted US commitment to handle illegal immigration alongside the southern border.

He said the US agreed to numerous things, including the placement of 6,000 Mexican National Guard along with the US-Mexico southern, calling it the biggest effort to date that the “Mexicans have committed”. He said both nations will be working together closely to make the agreement successful.

According to the agreement reached, Mexico agreed to bolster its security forces presence at the southern border in order to stop the flow of illegal immigration of Central American migrants from entering the US border and enhance its intelligence sharing with the US.

Also, Mexico has stated it would also take concrete actions against drug and human trafficking flows.
