Indian authoritative officials said on Thursday, Indian government has not sought any kind of “military facility” in return for $1.4 billion financial assistance to island nation Maldives.

According to news reports, there were no “quid pro quo” for granting a financial assistance to Maldives by the Indian government during Maldives’ President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s visit to India, ten days ago.

According to earlier reports, it has been said that India has asked Maldives to settle down military base in their island in exchange for the financial assistance to Maldives, who is facing financial crisis.

An Indian authoritative official said: “There is no request from the government of India to the government of Maldives to build any kind of military facility in return for any kind of financial assistance.”

India has on December 17, announced that it is providing the island nation with a financial support of about $1.4 billion, following talks between Solih and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During their meet, both officials of two nations has vowed to strengthen and deepen their security cooperation in Indian Ocean region.

The relationship between Indian and Maldives went worse after Maldives ex-President Abdullah Yameen had imposed emergency on February in 2018.

India has condemned Yameen’s act and decision and has asked Maldives’ government to restore its credibility of the political and electoral process by releasing several political prisoners.
