Kathmandu, August 22: The Indian government has on Wednesday offered financial aid worth Rs 223 crore to the government of Nepal for several infrastructure programmes, including reconstruction of destroyed houses in the deadliest 2015 earthquake that claimed the lives of more than 9,000 individuals and road connectivity.

The development was upheld during the 5th India-Nepal Joint Commission meeting held in Kathmandu, attended by Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar and his Nepali counterpart Pradeep Gyawali, according to Economic Times news reports.

A cheque of NR 2.45 billion (INR 153 crore) was offered to Nepal for the rebuilding of residents and structure in Gorkha and Nuwakot districts that were massively affected by the 2015 earthquake.

Moreover, India also provided a cheque of INR 80.71 crore for the creation of postal roads, Hulaki Marga, in the Nepali region of Terai. This amount was a part of India’s INR 500 crore commitment towards bolstering the Terai region roads.

India and Nepal held their fifth round of Indo-Nepal Joint Commission conference in the Nepali capital Kathmandu and inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) on food safety and standards.

Jaishankar, who arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday, met Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and discussed a range of issues of their mutual interest.

Nepal and India expressed satisfaction over the progress made in three new sectors – Inland Waterways, New Partnership in Agriculture, and Raxaul-Kathmandu Electrified Rail Line, agreed during Oli’s official visit to New Delhi in April 2018.
