Iran has on Thursday, confirmed that it has detained a United States citizen, the first American detention in the Islamic republic since president Donald Trump took the position.

According to news reported by BBC, the foreign ministry said Michael R White, the former US navy member, was arrested by Iran “some time ago” and is being taken and held at an Iranian prison.

Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said the US official had been immediately made aware of the US citizen’s arrest.

White’s mother told the US media that her son had been missing since July in Iran. Mother, Joanne White said her son went to Iran to meet his girlfriend was due to come back on 27 July via Dubai.

Joanne White said, “All I know is that he is alive and they were putting in a request for a consular visit by the Swiss.”

Iranian officials said White was arrested in the north-east city of Mashhad of the country.

A Department of State spokesperson told the BBC: “We are aware of reports of the detention of a US citizen in Iran.”

A spokesperson said, “We have no higher priority than the safety and security of US citizens abroad,” also, “Due to privacy considerations, we have no additional information to provide at this time.”

According to reports, White’s detention has been reported by the blog, Iranwire, on Monday.

A cyber-activist who spoke to CBS News, Ivar Farhadi said White was arrested when he was preparing to fly to Turkey to marry his girlfriend.
