Iran slams JCPOA Signatories call new nuclear pact

Iran’s foreign minister Javad Zarif has said on Saturday the United States must express seriousness when it comes to the prisoner swap, as Tehran has already shown its seriousness by implementing the nuclear deal.

According to Sputnik news reports, the minister’s comment comes is a response to a demand by the US state department for Iran to release many US citizens before the swap negotiations begin.

During an interview with CBS News, Zarif said, “We’re not supposed to show seriousness because we have shown our seriousness by implementing the nuclear deal.”

Zarif also underlined Iran was not linking the two issues, rather trying to use the nuclear deal issue as an example for Iranian reliability.

He said, “We’ve shown that when we say something, we abide by it,” adding, “The United States has shown that when they say something, they will then decide whether they want to abide by it or not.”

In a statement on Saturday, a spokesperson for US state department has suggested Iran could demonstrate seriousness through releasing “innocent US persons”.

The spokesperson has said, “The Iranian regime can demonstrate its seriousness regarding consular issues, involving Iranians who have been indicted or convicted of criminal violations of US sanctions laws, by releasing innocent U.S. persons immediately.”

He added the US call on Tehran to release all unjustly arrested and missing American citizens, including Nizar Zakka, Xiyue Wang,  Robert Levinson and Siamak Namazim, among others.
