Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has on Monday, announced to hold a snap election in earlies of April, less than four months, directly appealing to voters for a fresh election that could harbour him to weather the charges into corruption investigations.

The Netanyahu’s government cited the differences which has occurred with his coalition over an issue of new military conscription bill which has affected the exemption for the ultra-orthodox Jews, as one of the main reason for conducting a snap election.

However, there has been a speculation that right-wing leader could call for a snap election even before the decision by the attorney general of whether to follow police recommendations in order to indict him. Otherwise, the April 9 election would have not been due until November.

Within weeks, the decision over indictment was expected, but according to news reports, it said the attorney general could now opt to delay the indictments out of risk of concern on influencing the overall outcome of polls.

The justice ministry said the work over the cases would be continue as “independent of political events”.

According to news reports, Netanyahu on Monday, was quoted as saying “the voters, I think, understand exactly what we have done for Israel”. He said, “We are coming to ask for a clear mandate from the voters to continue leading Israel our way.”

Likud party spokesperson said the dissolution of votes were likely to be happened this week. Party’s leaders had a meeting with Netanyahu and announced a final decision to urge parliament to dissolve itself.

Hebrew University political analyst Reuven Hazan said an electoral victory could give Netanyahu ammunition in order to fight the indictment.

Hazan said, “He wants to win. He wants to turn around to the attorney general and say, ‘before you decide to prosecute me, pay attention. The people of Israel have reelected me … You cannot overturn the results of a democratic election.’”
