Tel Aviv, May 30: The parliament of Israel has voted on Thursday to dissolve itself, providing the nation a second snap election this year after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a coalition government to rule the nation ahead of a Wednesday deadline.

This will mark the first time in the nation’s history that a general poll has failed to produce a government, as per CNN news reports.

According to ANI news reports, the Knesset members have passed the bill into law just after midnight local time, which received 74 popular votes in favour against 45, just minutes after the prime minister’s Wednesday deadline to form a coalition ruling government.

Israel passed on Monday a preliminary motion aims to dissolve the parliament. Netanyahu, who leads the right-wing Likud Party, has on Wednesday until 21:00 GMT put a government together, after being directed to do the task by President Reuven Rivlin following the elections held on April 9.

In power since the past decade, while facing possible corruption charges and indictments, Netanyahu has been struggling to seal a pact with ultra-Orthodox Jewish, far-right and right-wing parties that would further ensure him a fifth term in power.

Netanyahu has faced hurdles to form a coalition in the past but has not broken a compromise between the political parties.

He later launched a scathing attack on Liberman, blaming him for the failure to produce and secure a new government and further accused him of never intended to reach a deal

After the final voting to dissolve the Knesset, Netanyahu’s statement was quoted by CNN as saying, “Avigdor Liberman is now part of the left.”
