Newly appointed Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte celebrated the age old Festa della Repubblica to mark the 72nd Italian Republic Day on the 2nd of June to mark the beginning of Italy’s Third Republic – and the very first populist government in western Europe. To commemorate them abolishing monarchy back in 1946, the Prime Minister and his newly sworn-in Cabinet bore witness to the revered military parade, and Italy’s most famous aeronautic acrobatic squad. Following the renowned tradition, squadrons of aeroplanes flew low over downtown Rome, leaving magnificent trails of vibrant red, white, and green smoke behind.

Despite this event being an annual tradition, this year, the significance of the Republic Day was amplified, as Italy had recently succeeded in ending a political deadlock which had been raging in the country for three months, and established its very first populist and eurosceptic government led by PM Giuseppe Content. 2nd June was a day of Italian pride, and the newly established government took advantage of the date to swear promises of increasing employment and prohibiting illegal migration to the public. PM Conte orated that this Saturday’s celebrations had transcended all the troubles and tensions of the previous few months, and had brought a long since due change in the country. Italy was now ready to work together for legality, to rise above all the corruption and confusion plaguing the present-day society.

Despite Conte’s Cabinet getting sworn in Friday bringing along political stability, as well as financial relief in Italy, other members of the eurozone are yet to show any indications of familiarity and alliance with the heavily eurosceptic government. The new government is scheduled for mandatory confidence votes in the Parliament next week, which could determine the final position and tenure of Giuseppe Conte’s populist regime.
