Tokyo, July 12: A Japanese foreign ministry official on Friday said the Japanese restrictions on exports of key materials utilized by South Korean tech organizations are not expected as a reprisal in a spat over South Koreans who worked for Japanese companies during World War Two.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the moves were “necessary measures related to security”, according to Reuters news reports. The official added the two sides are scheduled on Friday to hold a meeting to discuss the export curbs.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday said Japan’s export curb over key goods applied by Seoul’s technology firms could be lengthy and that his government is expected to sharply increase spending in order to help deduct their dependence on the Japanee exporters and suppliers.

Last week, Tokyo has said it would reinforce curbs on three material’ exports used in chips and displays of smartphones, citing a longing spat with Seoul over S Korean nationals forced to work for the Japanese companies at the time of World War Two.

The rising row threatens to trouble supplies of displays and chips by SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, the South Korean tech giants, which count Apple Inc including other smartphones producers as customers, according to Reuters news reports.
