Tokyo, June 10: Japan’s minister of economy, trade, and industry Hiroshige Seko has on Monday affirmed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s commitment to the Japan-Russia 8-point cooperation plan during his meeting with Russian economic development minister Maxim Oreshkin, ahead of a summit between Japan PM Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Seko said, “I would like to confirm today the latest progress on the [Russia-Japan] eight-point cooperation plan ahead of the planned summit between our countries at the end of this month.”

Abe has proposed this eight-point cooperation scheme in 2016 which focuses over economic projects. The plan aimed at promoting bilateral ties and cooperation through combining Russia’s social and economic needs with Japan’s expertise, according to Sputnik news reports.

At the meeting, Oreshkin has also stressed the proposed plan had already produced some concrete results in 2018.

“As for the Russian-Japanese relations, the eight-point cooperation plan, proposed by Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2016, showed concrete results by 2018. Trade between the two countries increased by 17 percent in 2018. Projects in various areas — from improving the urban environment, health care, to major investment projects — have been implemented. The summit [of Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin] will be held at the end of the month, so it is very important now to compare notes”, Oreshkin said.

In January, Japan and Russia launched full-scale meetings aimed at inking a peace deal. The negotiations are slated to be held at the top-level, with Japanese PM Abe and Russian President Putin, on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan.
