Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Monday said he “was not worthy” of the Nobel Peace Prize, while addressing calls by people and his government to award him the prize. Khan said the person worthy for this prize would be the one solving the Kashmir dispute according to Kashmiri people.

According to Dawn news reports, following Khan’s decision to release Indian Air Force pilot wing commander Abhinandan Varthaman, fans and supporters of him had started lobbying to award Khan with Noble Peace Prize.

While addressing the joint session of the Pakistani parliament on Thursday, Khan had termed the Indian pilot release “a peace gesture” towards India.

In a tweet, Khan wrote: “I am not worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize. The person worthy of this would be the one who solves the Kashmir dispute according to the wishes of the Kashmiri people and paves the way for peace & human development in the subcontinent.”

Soon after the release and handing over Abhinandan to the Indian government on Friday, “#NobelPeacePrizeForImranKhan” started trending in Pakistan over social media websites. Until Sunday, around 300,000 people had signed the online petitions calling for the award to Khan.

Federal minister for information and broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry has on Saturday submitted a resolution to national assembly secretariat calling for this prestigious award to be given to Khan for “his contribution towards peace in the region”.

The submitted resolution stated Khan had played a vital role in reducing tensions between two Asian countries which was caused by Pulwama terror attack in Kashmir.

The resolution concluded, “Keeping in view his contribution towards peace in the region, PM Imran Khan may be given Nobel Peace Prize.”

However, the opposition rejects the remarks and claimed: “The prime minister for whom you are running a campaign for Nobel Peace Prize did not even say hello to the opposition in the parliament.”
