Pakistan PM Khan, Russia’ Putin hold ‘informal’ talks at SCO summit

Bishkek, June 14: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Thursday held an “informal” dialogues with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin after arriving in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, on the sidelines of the 19th Meeting of the Council of the Heads of State of  Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

Earlier the day, Khan has expressed willingness to hold talks with Putin at the SCO conference, during an interview with Sputnik news. Khan was quoted as saying, “…So I met him, but this time I hope to have an informal chat with him. I already met the prime minister of Russia in China on my first visit.”

According to Dawn news reports, Khan has also held a cordial meeting with Sooronbay Sharipovich Jeenbekov, the Kyrgyz President, on the sidelines of the SCO conference, according to a Pakistan Prime Minister office statement.

As per the reports of Radio Pakistan, Jeenbekov has also extended an invitation to the Pakistan PM to address the two-day forum.

The statement added Khan has also greeted Jeenbekov over hosting the 19th SCO summit in his nation, who in response “appreciated Pakistan’s role in the SCO”.

Moreover, both leaders agreed on enhancing and bolstering air and land connectivity between Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan.

“The two leaders also reviewed bilateral relations and agreed to comprehensively upgrade mutual cooperation in diverse fields,” according to the statement.

Furthermost, the two leaders agreed to hold a “joint ministerial commission and bilateral political consultations soon”. They agreed to boost people-to-people contact and enhance tourism via visa-friendly regimes.

Khan was accompanied by special assistant on youth affairs Mohammad Usman Dar and foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. He is also slated to attend two other sessions of the forum.
