North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has on Friday wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, pledging efforts to bolster bilateral relations and cooperation, ahead of both leaders first-ever summit.

According to ANI news reports, Kim, in a letter to Putin, said he “have a willingness” to cooperate closely with Putin in order to maintain the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula and the world, while also continuing to constructively develop friendly ties in line with the demands of the new era.

North Korea’s state-run KCNA news agency, citing the letter, stated: “It is fully compatible with the common interests of our two peoples in order to continue to strengthen and develop the goodwill relationship that has been established by senior leaders and has long historical roots.”

Kim said he would like to take this opportunity to make greater achievement in responsible business in order to build strong relations with Russia, as well as, to have well-being and prosperity for the friendly people of Russia, the letter read.

Kim is slated to hold his first summit with Putin, scheduled for next week. Kim’s government official was quoted by state-run Yonhap news agency as saying, “Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to make a trip to the far east region around April 12. Chances are fairly high that a summit between Russia and North Korea could take place around the time.”

The senior officials of Russia and North Korea are reportedly traveling to each other’s nation to initiate the preparation of the summit. Russian interior minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev had earlier this month paid a visit to Pyongyang.
