Jeremy Corbyn No-Deal Brexit priority

London, Sep 2: Labour Party, British main opposition political party, will pursue every possible step to block no-deal Brexit post-UK parliament reopens on Tuesday, party’s leader Jeremy Corbyn will say on Monday.

According to Reuters news reports, members of parliament of Labour party opposed the withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU) without reaching a Brexit arrangement on October 31.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his efforts to ink a fresh Withdrawal agreement with the bloc would be hindered by attempts to block a no-deal Brexit in Westminster.

Johnson has attempted to limit MPs’ flexibility by suspending the parliament for one month ahead of Brexit deadline with top-level minister Michael Gove saying on Sunday if they do pass a bill, there was no assurance that it would be noticed.

As per excerpts of Corbyn’s speech slated to be delivered in north England, Salford, Corbyn will say the prime minister’s attempt to suspend parliament is “an attack on democracy which will be resisted”.

“(On Monday) the shadow cabinet will be meeting to finalise our plans to stop the disaster of No Deal ahead of the return of parliament (on Tuesday),” he will say, referring to a meeting of senior Labour figures.

“We are working with other parties to do everything necessary to pull our country back from the brink.”

Johnson has told the Sunday Times the choice for MPs was either to back Corbyn, who “wanted to scrub the democratic verdict of the people – and plunge this country into chaos”, or support those who “wanted to get on with it”.

However, Corbyn will say the fight to halt no-deal Brexit isn’t a struggle between those who seek to stay or leave the EU but, “it’s a battle of the many against the few who are hijacking the referendum result to shift even more power and wealth towards those at the top”.

Conservative deputy chairman Paul Scully said only Johnson and his party can provide the “leadership Britain needs” and leave the bloc by scheduled Oct 31 accepting whatever the circumstances and “deliver the change British people voted for”.

On Sunday, Labour’s Brexit spokesperson Keir Starmer has said the party’s plan, scheduled on Tuesday to be revealed, had a “very simple” aim to block Johnson taking the UK out of the bloc without striking a deal, if needed by forcing the prime minister to renew the Brexit deadline.

Johnson is expected on Monday to hold a meeting with some of his rebels in order to discuss his efforts towards safeguarding a withdrawal deal, ex-minister David Gauke has said on Sunday.
