Venezuela opposition to return National Assembly

Embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has on Tuesday accused protesters backing Juan Guaido, the opposition leader, of attempting to “attack and overthrow a legitimate government to enslave Venezuela”.

According to ANI news reports, as Guaido declared the beginning of the final phase of “Operation Freedom”, Maduro said, “We have been facing various of coup d’etat, due to the obsessive efforts of the Venezuelan right, the Colombian oligarchy and the US empire.”

Guaido’s Tuesday demonstration call led protesters to summon at the La Carlota military airbase, during which confrontation took place between supporters of Maduro and Guaido, CNN reported.

Reportedly, around 71 people lost their lives, including 42 wounded, as the nation witnessed one of the deadliest days ever since Guaido declared himself as the interim Venezuelan president in January, ratcheting up political crisis.

Guaido has called for the “largest march in the history”, calling on his supporters to take it to the streets on May 1 to protest to ratchet up pressure on Maduro to step down.

Guaido, who declared himself as self-proclaimed interim president of Venezuela in January, has invoked the constitution over the basis that Maduro’s re-election in 2018 was illegitimate.

Maduro is channelling cash flow from its oil sales through Russia’s state-run energy giant Rosneft firm, seeking to evade the US sanctions imposed on Venezuela by the US, as per the reports citing documents and sources.
