Maldives’ finance minister Ibrahim Ameer on Monday, said China is on process to execute infrastructures projects in Maldives but “we believe that most of these projects are at inflated prices” as compared to originally proposed prices.

Ameer said, “We believe that most of these projects are at inflated prices, and so we are looking at them.” However, he further said the island nation is not expected to take back their steps on contracts as including bridge, many other infrastructure were already completed.

China has constructed a bridge connecting Male to another island to the main airport. In fact, is also constructing airport as well as mass housing on the land which is reclaimed from the sea. Ameer also cited their efforts of negotiation on loans, which former government has taken for these projects.

Ameer said, “We cannot do much in terms of renegotiation but going forward our objective would be to reduce the cost of our infrastructure projects.”

China has built infrastructures like bridges, ports and also highways connecting Male to countries Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and also Pakistan for trading purposes across Asia and into Europe.

Maldives’ foreign minister Abdullah Shahid showed his confidence saying that Indian leaders are being assured about the best ties between the immediate neighbors and would also repay back ab “India First” policy.
