New Delhi, June 7: India’s external affairs minister S Jaishankar is scheduled to embark on an official two-day visit to Bhutan from Friday to mark his first bilateral visit to neighbour foreign nation after assuming the office of the ministry.

According to ANI news reports, the MEA’s visit to Bhutan reflects the importance which New Delhi attaches with Bhutan to its bilateral and diplomatic relationship, the MEA stated in a press release.

During his tour, Jaishankar is expected to meet with Jigme Khesan Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan, with an audience. He will call on Bhutan’s Prime Minister Lyonchhen Dr Lotay Tshering, as well as, hold a meeting with his Bhutanese counterpart Lyonpo Dr Tandi Dorji.

The MEA statement said the two sides, during Jaishankar’s visit, will hold discussions related to the entire range of bilateral ties, including hydro-power cooperation, economic development, and high-level exchanges.

It further read: “India and Bhutan share a unique and time tested bilateral relationship, characterized by utmost trust, goodwill and mutual understanding. External affairs minister’s visit is in keeping with the tradition of regular visits and exchange of views at the high levels between the two countries.”

Tshering and other BISMTCH leaders had on May 30 paid a visit to New Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the straight second term in the Lok Sabha election.
