Mexico City, June 3: Mexican president’s political party is likely to gain winning scores in Sunday’s state elections, with preliminary outcomes and an exit-poll showing his party’s winning both governorship.

According to Reuters news reports, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s party was moved for victory in the northern state of Baja California and the central state of Puebla, despite rampant violence, a weak economy and disturbed relations with United States President Donald Trump.

Obrador’s National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party was ahead in a race for the governorship in Puebla.

According to the National Electoral Institute reports, the MORENA party candidate Luis Miguel Geronimo has won 42.5 per cent of votes in favour with just half of the ballot result disclosed, much comfortably ahead of his nearest rival.

MORENA also won the governorship in Baja California with votes between 53.8 per cent and 57.2 per cent in favour, as per an exit poll report published by Consulta Mitofsky.

On Sunday, dozens of lesser seats have contested in the local elections across various states, but only Baja California and Puebla considered to be the states for governors.

Opinion polls had provided a commanding lead to Obrador’s leftist party against a divided opposition in both states.

US President has on Thursday threatened to impose fresh tariffs on its neighbour Mexico if the nation does not step up its enforcement move and take steps to halt the illegal immigration.

The US president further cautioned if Mexico didn’t adhere to Trump’s demand then the US tariffs would rise up to 10 percent of Mexico good imports by July, up to 15 percent by August, 20 percent by September and would reach 25 percent by October.

Mexico vowed to give an “energetic response” to Trump’s announcement of a 5 per cent tariffs hikes on the Mexican goods.

Mexico’s statement comes in retaliation to Trump’s unveiling his plan of levying tariffs on the goods exporting from Mexico if the nation does not step up enforcement action and halt the illegal immigration at the southern border.

On Saturday, Mexican Economy Minister Graciela Marquez stated she would be holding a meeting with US commerce secretary Wilbur Ross on Monday in Washington DC. Both governments will kick off dialogues over the issue in the coming weeks.
