Caracas, Sep 23: Embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has said on Monday the United States was using its “extremist policies” and the “unconventional war” to cripple the 2020 Venezuelan parliamentary elections.

In an interview with Rossiya 24, he “personally” cautioned the international public that President Donald Trump administration with its extremist policies waging against Venezuela is already weighing options to undermine the parliamentary vote, Sputnik reported.

“… And you know why? Because they know they cannot win them. Just as they could not win the presidential vote on 20 May 2018,” Maduro said.

The Venezuelan president added his administration has already obtained the date in September showing the extremist Trump government with its unconventional ways of war against Venezuela “intends to act against the next year’s election in order to sabotage it”.

After the parliament terms had been extended in May, Venezuela is expected to have a parliamentary vote by the end of 2020 in order to elect 167 officials of the National Assembly.

Maduro also said he was not ruling out any possibility of direct talks with the US president. When asked, if he is ready to hold talks with Trump, he replied: “Of course, yes.”

He said he was prepared to negotiate with Trump on mutual consensus, only if Trump halts his failed policy of waging war against Venezuela. “I believe that President Trump was let down in the malign policy that failed,” he added.
