increasing differences between US and North Korea

Seoul, August 23: North Korea’s foreign minister Ri Yong Ho has described US secretary of state Mike Pompeo as a “poisonous plant of American diplomacy”, pledging to “shutter the absurd dream” of the United States.

Ri also blamed Pompeo on Friday for casting dark shadows over the North Korea-US negotiations, claiming the American diplomat was way more interested in his own politics that in pertaining Washington’s foreign policy.

The development threatened to slow down the potential resumption of nuclear talks between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump, according to Al-Jazeera news.

He made the remarks to protest interview comments of Pompeo, who said the US will maintain its crippling sanctions on Pyongyang unless it implement its commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

The North foreign minister also said he couldn’t let the “reckless remarks” by US state secretary pass by him as they came in the midst of a possible relaunch of the denuclearization talks.

Ri terms Pompeo ‘brazen’ because he “had begged for” denuclearization and enhanced bilateral relations when he visited North Korea for a state visit and met Kim several times.

A North Korean spokesperson has on Thursday stated the nation has “no interest” in talks with the US unless it ceases escalating hostile joint military drills with South Korea.

However, South’s deputy national security advisor Kim Hyun-ching said he remains up to date over the potential dialogues.

“My impression was that North Korea and the United States would carry out dialogue soon, and it would go well,” Kim told reporters in Seoul.
