North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said on Thursday North Korea should deliver a “telling blow” to all those nations imposing sanctions over the country by ensuring Pyongyang’s economy is “self-reliant”.

According to Al-Jazeera news reports, hours after the United States President Donald Trump and his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in held talks in Washington DC, the KCNA, in comments, reported on Thursday that Kim has said he would double down over efforts in order to generate a self-supporting national economy.

Kim was quoted as saying this was “to deal a telling blow to the hostile forces who go with bloodshot eyes miscalculating that sanctions can bring [North Korea] to its knees”.

Kim’s remark over the North Korean position was the first comment since the Hanoi summit failure with the US president in February.

On Wednesday, Kim said that “self-reliance and self-supporting national economy are the bedrock of the existence of our own style of socialism, the motive power of its advance and development and the eternal lifeline essential to the destiny of our revolution”.

Kim has said North Korea would take an independent course if the US does not lift sanctions. It is empty rhetoric. He would not resume missiles testing.
