A Pentagon statement released on Thursday showed that North Korea’s missile and nuclear program poses an “extraordinary threat” to the United States, further warning that the US must “remain vigilant”, despite an ongoing diplomatic dispute with North Korea.

During a speech at the Pentagon, the US President Donald Trump has introduced “the missile defence review report”, which was released just hours ahead of the arrival of a top North Korean representative in Washington to discuss a possible second summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un and the US president Trump.

The report said: “While a possible new avenue to peace now exists with North Korea, it continues to pose an extraordinary threat and the United States must remain vigilant.”

According to USA Today news reports, Trump has mentioned North Korea only in his remarks, but the report described that Pyongyang has invested its considerable resources and also undertaken extensive missile and nuclear testing “in order to realize the capability to threaten the U.S. homeland with missile attack”.

The reports said: “As a result, North Korea has neared the time when it could credibly do so.”

In recent weeks, Trump has expressed Washington’s relations with Pyongyang in the growing terms and highlighted his administration’s diplomatic efforts. Earlier this month, Trump has said, “Now I say this, North Korea, we’re doing very well,” adding, “And again, no rockets. There are no rockets. There’s no anything. We’re doing very well.”

The US vice president Mike Pence has noted on Wednesday that North Korea still has not taken any “concrete steps” towards denuclearization.

In a speech to the US ambassadors at the state department, Pence said, “While the president has started a promising dialogue with Chairman Kim, we still await concrete steps by North Korea to dismantle the nuclear weapons that threaten our people and our allies in the region.”
