Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was set to pay a two-day official visit to Iran on April 21 and 22, Islamabad’s foreign office has announced on Monday.

The prime minister’s visit will mark a first-time official trip to Iran. Khan’s visit has come after an invitation from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

According to Dawn news reports, the foreign office announced: “Prime Minister Imran Khan will pay an official visit to Iran on 21-22 April 2019 on the invitation of President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, His Excellency Hassan Rouhani. This will be the first visit of the Prime Minister to Iran.”

Khan was initially scheduled to pay a visit to Iran earlier in January, but however, the trip was cancelled at the 11th hour, due to some unexplained reasons.

Pak’s FO statement has stated that Pakistan-Iran relations were “marked by close historical and cultural linkages and strong people-to-people exchanges”.

But, the relations have also frozen due to concerns related security at the border. According to the diplomatic sources, security issues at the border will be on the top of the prime minister’s agenda during his visit to Tehran.
