United States secretary of state Mike Pompeo has said on Wednesday Washington‘s nuclear talks with North Korea would be “bumpy”, however, expressed hope to have several additional chances to hold discussions over denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Pompeo, in an exclusive interview with CBS News, stated Pyongyang’s possession of missile and nuclear weapons put it at risk rather than making it safe, according to Reuters news reports.

Pompeo said the outcome of US-North Korea nuclear talks hinged ultimately over whether Pyongyang leader Kim Jong-un is willing to present strategic decision to give up its nuclear programme.

He stated, “It’s an enormous challenge for that country to make its shift,” adding, “It has for an awfully long time told its people that those nuclear weapons were the thing that kept them secure. They now need to shift to the narrative to ‘those are the things that put them at risk.’”

Pompeo said both nations had learned from the second summit between Kim and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Hanoi, Vietnam, in February end, which has ended abruptly without reaching any nuclear deal as Trump stressed over Kim’s last year commitment of complete denuclearization and Kim focused on US sanctions relief.

Pompeo said “there was a lot more nuance to the conversation than just, ‘Hey they had a position, we had a position; we walked away.’”, in the Hanoi summit.

He said the US hopes that it get several more chances to have serious discussions about how both sides can move forward with this process.
