Tehran, May 24: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has on Thursday vowed the country will neither surrender to the United States nor “give up” its goals even if the American attacks the nation.

The Iranian President was quoted by the state-run IRNA news agency as saying, “More than one year after the imposition of these severe (US) sanctions, our people have not bowed to pressures despite facing difficulties in their lives.”

He added, “We need resistance so our enemies know that if they bomb our land, and if our children are martyred, wounded or taken as prisoners, we will not give up on our goals for the independence of our country and our pride.”

Rouhani’s comments come a day after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commander major-general Gholamali Rashid stated on Wednesday Washington and its allies “do not dare” to target Iran and launch attacks because of its “spirit of resistance”, according to ANI news reports.

US President Donald Trump pulled out Washington from the 2015 agreement last year, further ratcheting up pressure over Tehran, aiming at strangling Iran’s economy by putting an end to Iranian crude oil exports.

Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) chief has warned Tehran was on a brink of a “full-scale confrontation with the enemy”, a day after nation’s supreme chief Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated there would be no war with America amid tensions escalation.

On May 16, Khamenei ruled out any talks with the US government over the disputed issues, Tasnim news agency reported.
