London, May 28: United Kingdom (UK) foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt has said on Tuesday to pursue a no-deal Brexit, it would be equivalent to “political suicide” for the nation, becoming the senior leader competing to replace Prime Minister Theresa May, extending a battle line with the rival opponents.

According to Reuters news reports, Hunt’s remark has put him at odds with other prime ministerial candidates including his predecessor Boris Johnson, who has stated Britain needs to quit the European Union (EU) with or without an agreement by the end of this year October.

The prime minister has announced plans to resign as the PM and leader of the Conservative Party after repeatedly failing to get her Brexit plan through the British parliament. She failed thrice to secure parliamentary approval for Brexit deal to leave the bloc, setting up a poll in her party to succeed her in the upcoming weeks.

Based on the contest, it would be decided how or whether the UK will leave the EU, or whether it would see a fresh national election with major parties getting divided, shaken by Brexit.

While pitching himself contrasting to Johnson and other contenders who insist that leaving the bloc without any deal is indeed to remain on the table, Hunt stated such moves would get blocked by lawmakers and would trigger national polls.

“Trying to deliver no deal through a general election is not a solution; it is political suicide,” Hunt wrote in Tuesday’s Daily Telegraph. “A different deal is, therefore, the only solution – and what I will pursue if I am a leader.”

Embattled UK PM Theresa May has announced on Friday she will resign on June 6, after the parliament observed that her Brexit deal failed thrice to get passed. She also said she will step down as the leaders of the Conservative party too on the same date.

May will step down as Conservative Party leader on 7 June, but not as prime minister. She will carry on governing the country and fulfilling her official duties until a successor is chosen.
