Kyushu [Japan], July 4: Bracing for flooding and mudslides, the Japanese authorities directed more than a million people to evacuate the southwestern region of Kyushu island as torrential rains on Thursday continue to jolt the region, triggering heave mudslides and floods.

CNN quoted local officials as saying Kyushu island struggled a month’s rainfall in a day. On Thursday, the region received over 300 millimetres of rain, equivalent to the average rainfall of Island of 319 mm for July, according to ANI news reports.

Meanwhile, state-run NHK World reported rainfall in Miyazaki and Kagoshima’s region received about 1,000 mm – double of July’s average, since Friday.

The Japanese authorities have on Wednesday called on more than millions of its people to evacuate the southernmost Kyushu island to seek shelter in the safer areas and evacuation centre as soon as possible as heavy torrential rains threatened to blow widespread landslides.

The NHK reported the evacuation orders were issued for more than 1.02 million citizens of Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures at the Kyushu’s southern tip.

In the capital, Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said people should “take steps to protect their lives, including early evacuation,” adding he ordered the armed forces to prepare themselves for any time rescue operations.
