Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has on Wednesday accused the United States of plotting and planning to use its economic pressure to overthrow the Islamic republic’s clerical establishment, and has ruled out a possibility of dialogues with Washington.

According to Reuters news reports, while delivering a speech in the Iranian northern province of Gilan, Rouhani said, “Iran is in an economic and psychological war with America and its allies … their aim is to change the regime … But we will not allow it as our nation and the leadership are united against our enemies.”

Tensions between the US and Iran have grown since the American leader Donald Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 multinational pact over curbing Iranian nuclear and missile programmes in last year’s May.

The US president has stated that the agreement has been flawed because it failed to curb Iranian ballistic missiles programme or its support for the proxies in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon.

The United States has reimposed sanctions over Iran that were lifter under a deal in 2016.

The European signatories of the deal, China and Russia are opposed to the US decision to re-impose oil and financial sanctions over Iran and have been trying to salvage the agreement.
