Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has on Wednesday rejected the resignation letter of the Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and said he would consider accepting Zarif’s resignation to be against the national interest.

Zarif has on Monday surprised everyone when he announced that he was resigning via Instagram. But however, describing the acceptance of Zarif’s resignation as against the Islamic Republic’s interest, Rouhani has rejected his letter.

According to Sputnik news reports, in a letter to Zarif, Rouhani said, “As the supreme leader has described you a ‘trustworthy, brave and religious’ person in the forefront of the resistance against widespread US pressure, I consider accepting your resignation to be against national interests and reject it.”

Rouhani’s statement comes as Zarif thanked the government officials and citizens of Iran for their support while stating that Zarif had always remained committed to serving Iran.

On his official Instagram account, Zarif said, “As a modest servant, I have never had any concern but elevating the foreign policy and the status of the foreign ministry.”

Meanwhile, the ISNA (Iranian Students’ News Agency) reported that just after Rouhani rejected Zarif’s resignation, Zarif attended an event to welcome Armenia’s PM to Iran.

The top Iranian diplomat made a surprise announcement on his Instagram account about his resignation on Monday.

In the post, he apologised “for the inability to continue the service and for all the shortcomings during the service,” but declined to reveal the reasons for the decision.
