Arkady Babchenko, a former Russian escapee anti-Kremlin journalist, who had been proclaimed dead by the Ukrainian police 24 hours ago, walked up to the news conference which was discussing the investigation of his murder on the 30th, and revealed the ulterior motives behind the staging of his death. The news of him being gunned down at his Kiev apartment building had been publicized to as to prevent an actual Kremlin assassination plot.

Neither his wife, nor his fellow reporters had known about the legitimacy of this act prior to his revelation. Vasyl Gritsak, the head of the Ukrainian Security Service revealed the plot when he invited Babchenko to his own murder news conference, where he apologized to his wife and friends who had mourned for him and buried a staged corpse. Gritsak then proceeded to explain to the group who the SBU had identified as a Ukrainian citizen to have been bought by the Russian security service with $40,000 to murder Arkady Babchenko at his house. The unidentified citizen had then hired a lower class gunman to carry out the hit for him. However, due to timely interference by the SBU, Ukraine had succeeded to detain the Russian man who paid for the killing, and saved Babchenko’s life at the same time.

However, Ukraine doesn’t believe this assassination attempt to be anything other than a tranche of a larger plot against the country initiated by Russia. The unidentified Ukrainian had also been paid to procure 300 Ak-47 rifled and kilos of explosive weapons which were expected to have been used as terror attacks in Ukraine, had it not been uncovered earlier. Nonetheless, Arkady Babchenko confessed that he was happy to have walked out alive of the ploy, and even more happier to have been able to thwart larger terrorist attacks in Ukraine.
