Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

In a meeting held on Saturday, the representatives of PML-N decided to go with Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as the interim prime minister of the country. Abbasi will hold the position for approx 45 days before Shehbaz Khan is elected to the national assembly and is eligible to take over as the full-time Prime Minister.

The political tussle in Pakistan started after the Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz Sharif from the post of Prime Minister and held him guilty of dishonesty and corruption in the high-profile PANAMA Paper case.

The meeting of the parliamentary committee was attended by the heavy-weights of the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), including Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Ahsan Iqbal, Ayaz Sadiq, Saad Rafique, Rana Tanveer, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Shahbaz Sharif along with other members of the PML-N’s leadership. The meeting unanimously elected Shahid Khawan Abbasi as the interim PM for the time being. PML-N currently holds a majority in the government, which means that the party can get any leader of its choice elected as the prime minister.

A formal announcement of the same is yet to take place, however, it is expected that Abbasi will take oath early next week.
