The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan announced on the 27th of May that they had successfully received Mr. Marco Vinicio Cerezo Arevalo, the secretary-general of the Central American Integration System (SICA), at the airport. Marcio’s stay in the country is expected to last for five days, during which he intends to observe and study Taiwan’s political and economic conditions and developments. Before he took up this post of the secretary-general on 2017, Marco Vinicio Cerezo was a well-known politician in Central America. He had served prior tenures as the President of Guatemala, from January 1986 to January 1991. Under his presidency, the Esquipulas Nicaraguan Peace Agreement was signed, which essentially brought all military conflicts in Central America, following the Cold War, to an end.

However, Vinicio’s loyalty now lies with SICA, an organization which intends to promote all rounded development in Central America. This, inevitably, requires them to extend their political, social, and economic hand towards other countries, and Taiwan has remained under SJCA’s observation since 2002. During his stay in the country, Cerezo is scheduled to attend a banquet by Vice Foreign Minister Jose Maria Liu alongside President Tsai Ing-wen, and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu. At this conference, the three-man delegation is expected to discuss Taiwan’s development in several internal fields, and use it as a reference to categorize the country under SICA.
