A South Korean member of parliament has confirmed on Thursday, that North Korean ambassador to Italy Jo Song-gil has went to hide amid reports of him asking for asylum.

South Korean Kim Min-ki said that Jo’s position was due to end in late November, and Jo with his wife had fled to the embassy of North Korean in Rome without providing any kind of notice at the early of the month.

According to a news reports, Jo has applied seeking asylum to a western country. The country’s name was unidentified. Report said that the Italian authorities were “protecting him in a safe a place” but “agonizing” that what to do next.

According to Italian agency reports released on Thursday, it denied to receive any kind of asylum request from an official from North Korea.

A foreign ministry said: “For diplomatic purposes, at the time the ministry was informed about the changeover of the appointment,” adding, “That changeover then took place.”

Jo had been acting North Korean ambassador in Rome from October 2017, after Italy had expelled Mun Jong-nam, previous ambassador. The reports said Jo was “known to be a son or son-in-law of one of the highest-level officials in the North’s regime”.
