PM set to form new alliance within next two weeks.

Ranil Wickremesinghe will take oath on Sunday, and will regain his power as the prime minister of Sri Lanka, a statement confirmed by the United National Party (UNP). UNP minister also stated that the President Maithripala Sirisena is all set to announce the decision of re-appointing Wickremesinghe as Sri Lanka’s new prime minister.

After Sirisena held meeting with Wickremesinghe and speaker Karu Jayasuriya on Thursday, they decided to reinstate Wickremesinghe. Meanwhile, Namal Rajapaksa, Mahina Rajapaksa’s son, confirmed that the present prime minister would be stepping down as prime minister in order “to ensure the stability of the nation”. Sri Lanka’s recent Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will on Saturday, resign.

Namal Rajapaksa has said that they will organize a coalition with Sirisena, who has triggered Sri Lanka’s political crisis by sacking Wickremesinghe and replaced him with Rajapaksa.

This latest decision by Rajapaksa came after Sri Lanka’s apex court ordered to Rajapaksa and cabinet minister to not to act like ministers of Sri Lanka and refrain them from exercising the powers which they claimed.

An apex court has on Thursday, attacked Sirisena for sacking the parliament and termed it “illegal” and also cancelled the snap election, Sirisena called for on January 5.

Though, twice snap elections were held, Rajapaksa has failed to prove his power and majority as he got defeated both the time against Wickremesinghe, however, Rajapaksa still refused to step down. Wickremesinghe too refused to step down as he claimed to be prime minister after two voting sessions and went to court calling his sacking “illegal”.

According to news reports, Sirisena has called upon to form a new government with Wickremesinghe over this weekend and end Sri Lanka’s political crisis.
