Sudanese military council has on Wednesday met with the organizer of weeks of mass street protest that has toppled ex-President Omar al-Bashir to resign, after a week of suspended discussions.

According to Al-Jazeera news reports, in a statement, before Wednesday’s meeting, the ruling council stated it was keen to discuss proposals from the group behind the protests in order to introduce a joint solution and for an immediate transfer of power to the civilian transitional council.

The Sudanese military council spokesperson lieutenant general Shamseldin Kibashi said, “We agreed to form a joint committee, between us and them, to discuss these points of succession and to introduce a joint solution with the military council and the Alliance of Freedom and Change.”

The protest’s organizer, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) and allies, have accepted the military council’s invitation and met with them, according to the SPA spokesperson.

On Thursday, the civilian transitional body is expected to announce its own ruling council during mass rallies.

SPA spokesperson Ahmed Rabie said, “We agreed to this meeting based on their positive position in the statement prior to the invitation to the Alliance of Freedom and Change. And honestly, it was started in a beautiful spirit.”

As tensions escalated with the SPA group, the military body has said three of its members have stepped down on Wednesday. The body said, in a statement, Lieutenant General Jalal al-Deen al-Sheikh, Police Lieutenant General al-Tayeb Babakr and Lieutenant General Omar Zain al-Abideen have stepped down from their posts.
