Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, on the event of International Women’s Day, ordered the release of women detained over the charges of anti-government demonstrations on Friday, hours after protest broke in two largest cities of Sudan.

According to Reuters news reports, during a meeting, according to a presidency statement, Bashir directed the head of the security and intelligence service to immediately release all women who were arrested in connection with the mass protests.

Anti-government estimated that around 150 women were currently in prison for having a connection with the protest.

Earlier, hundreds of protesters demonstrated chanting anti-government slogans hours after leaving prayers at a mosque, drawing tear gases from police, according to eyewitnesses.

Crowds also gathered in several areas of the capital Khartoum after prayers, witnesses said. A dozen protesters chanted “the revolution is the choice of the people” and “fall, that’s it”.

The international criminal court wants to seek Bashir over the charges of masterminding genocides in Darfur region, which he denied any wrongdoing.

He has been lobbying for Sudan to be removed from a list of countries Washington considers state sponsors of terrorism.

Hundreds of whom also demonstrated on Thursday under a women’s day theme.
