Post the 1950 Indo-Nepal peace and friendship treaty, the relations between India and Nepal have always been cordial and warm.

The two nations support each other in case of wars or threat from outside enemies according to the clause that neither government shall tolerate any threat to the security of the other by a foreign aggressor” and obligated both sides “to inform each other of any serious friction or misunderstanding with any neighboring state likely to cause any breach in the friendly relations subsisting between the two governments.” There is also free pass of citizens to and fro the border without visa or passport.

To again discuss matters concerning mutual interests of the two countries External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj will be conducting a two week visit to the neighborhood nation. “The visit is in keeping with the tradition of regular high-level political exchanges between India and Nepal, and reflects the expanding bilateral partnership and the importance that the two countries attach to further strengthening it across diverse sectors,” is an excerpt from a release from the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday.

This is to maintain and develop formation of a new government by a Communist alliance which is expected to be headed by K P Oli, CPN-UML chief and former prime minister. The diplomatic visit by Ms. Sushma Swaraj will be the first big engagement by the newly elected rulers of Kathmandu. It was only last week Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reached out to the elected Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli wherein both the ministers had invited each other for a visit.

The economic blockade of 2015-16 had left a slight rift between Mr. Oli and Prime Minister Modi. The same release said that he upcoming visit will provide an opportunity to hold discussions with political leaders of Nepal on issues of mutual interest, and to advance age-old, special ties of friendship between India and Nepal.
